
Redevelopment of the Virgen del Remedio district in Alicante: €4.5 million worth of works to start
A new stage in the city's transformation: pedestrian zones, a new square and modernization of infrastructure

The Municipality of Alicante has launched a tender for the redevelopment of the Virgen del Remedio residential area, part of the ERRP (Residential Redevelopment Planned Programme). The project budget is €4.55 million , co-financed by European funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan .
The works will cover the area bounded by the avenues of Pintor Gastón Castelló , Pino Santo and the streets of Villa de Chiva and Ávila . The implementation period is 8 months .
New square and superblocks: priority for pedestrians
The project envisages the creation of a new public square between Villa de Chiva and Granada streets, as well as the formation of two superblocks with pedestrian priority , which will significantly improve safety and comfort of movement.
Will be performed:
- Reconfiguration of the street network and parking spaces
- Widening of sidewalks
- Installation of new city equipment and street lighting with LED lanterns
Inclusion, greening and climate improvements
The project also includes:
- Routes with universal accessibility
- New navigation and street furniture , including parking for people with reduced mobility
- Planting trees and installing flower beds
- Rainwater collection systems for irrigation
- Creation of climate zones with drinking fountains
Gender approach and development for all ages
A gender-sensitive approach to the urban environment will be implemented:
- Removing hidden corners and tight spaces
- Creation of playgrounds , zones for the elderly (bio-trainers) and calisthenic complexes
Comprehensive transformation of the area
At the same time, a project to reconstruct 264 residential buildings will be launched for a total of 6.9 million euros . As a result, the total investment in the area will amount to almost 11.5 million euros .
“This initiative will change the face of the Virgen del Remedio neighbourhood, creating new public spaces, improving the quality of life and giving the area new momentum,” said Rocío Gómez , urban development councillor.
