
🔧 Alicante begins renovation of 14 rental apartments for young people in the San Gabriel area
🏗️ Authorities have approved a safety plan for the launch of works worth €1.1 million - the project is scheduled to take 10 months
Alicante, 15 July 2025. The Municipal Housing Fund (Patronato Municipal de la Vivienda) has approved the last necessary step, the Health and Safety Plan , to begin the refurbishment of 14 apartments in the San Gabriel neighbourhood , which will be rented to young people under 35. The project is being carried out by Aitana Actividades de Construcción SL , with a total cost of €1,148,062.85 and a completion period of 10 months .
📌 The goal of the project is to expand affordable housing for young people
According to Carlos de Juan , housing adviser, this is one of the administration's priority projects:
"We are doing everything to expand the stock of social and affordable housing. These 14 new apartments are part of a large initiative that also includes 15 apartments in El Portón and the transfer of 5 plots for the construction of 220 new housing units."
🏘️ What does the reconstruction project include?
The project will include the following:
- Elimination of construction defects;
- Energy efficient modernization;
- Improving accessibility (including installation of a lift);
- Connection of telecommunication infrastructure;
- Improving the quality of the urban environment and facades;
- Redevelopment of premises: 14 one-room apartments (4 more than now) + common room.
One of the apartments on the ground floor will be fully adapted for people with limited mobility.
💶 Financing and sustainability
The city has applied for funding from the Next Generation EU fund under the Recovery and Resilience Plan , as the project will reduce non-renewable energy consumption by 80% through the modernisation of the building envelope and engineering systems.
🏛️ Updating the Housing Fund Charter
A new version of the statute of the Patronato Municipal de la Vivienda has also been approved (for the first time since 1988), which brings the regulations into line with modern standards.
The governance structure will now include a president, vice president, board and manager , and the council will be represented by:
- 9 members of the municipality (proportional to factions),
- representatives of the province, autonomy and specialized professional associations.
