Social Housing for Youth: Work Begins in San Gabriel

Alicante, 4 August 2025. The Municipal Housing Authority has begun the refurbishment of 14 apartments on Fernando Diaz de Mendoza Street, in the San Gabriel neighbourhood, for rent to young people under 35.

🔹 Completion date - 10 months

The work is being carried out by the contractor Aitana Actividades de Construcción SL , which won the competition.

Support for youth and expansion of the social fund

The project became part of the city's overall strategy for the development of affordable housing . In parallel, construction is being prepared:

  • 15 apartments in El Portón (Old Town) - in the final stages of preparation;
  • 48 apartments in Rabasa – in collaboration with the Government of Valencia;
  • more than 220 new housing units on five municipal sites;
  • 6,000 future apartments in new areas such as Lomas del Garbinet and the new Albufereta.

"We are rebuilding the housing policy that was abandoned during the eight years of the left government. Now we are focusing on youth and affordability," said Carlos de Juan , the housing councilor.

Transformation of teachers' building into youth housing

The former building of the teachers' foundation was handed over to the Patronage in December 2023. In 2024, a competition for design and supervision was held, which was won by Belmonte Botella, SLP . The project itself was developed and handed over in January 2025. Construction work began in July.

Key Project Improvements

The building will be completely adapted and updated:

  • ✅ Energy renovation (reduction of non-renewable energy consumption by 80%)
  • ✅ Improved accessibility (including lift and adapted ground floor apartment)
  • ✅ Modern telecommunications infrastructure
  • ✅ Updated look and comfortable environment
  • ✅ Redevelopment to create 14 one-room apartments (4 more than before)
  • ✅ Common indoor multifunctional hall

One of the apartments will be fully accessible to persons with disabilities, in accordance with the legislation on inclusion and accessible environment.

💶 Financing: focusing on ecology and innovation

The city applied for co-financing from the European fund Next Generation EU , as the project meets the objectives of the Recovery and Sustainable Development Plan :

  • and social justice .
