Alicante doubles budget for senior activities, to offer 7,900 hours of activities a year

Significant increase in funding and expansion of programs

On July 15, 2025, at a meeting of the Alicante City Council, a contract was approved for the management and implementation of classes, courses and other activities in the municipal centers for the elderly for the next two years.

The budget has been increased by 44% to €223,144 per year. This will allow the number of service hours to be expanded from 4,900 to 7,905 (an increase of 38%) and the number of classes to be increased from 66 to 114 (an increase of 42%).

Focus on active longevity and combating loneliness

Delegate for the Elderly, Begoña Leon, noted:
“The well-being of our older residents is a top priority. We are increasing services and resources to combat unwanted social isolation and promote active aging.”

What will change in the program?

  • The contract term will be extended for 2 years with a possible extension for 1 year.
  • Budget: 446,289 euros
  • The main focus is on sports activities that are in the greatest demand

Senior centers and social services

In Alicante there are 19 municipal centres for the elderly , with more than 26,850 registered participants .

Additionally, the city provides:

  • Home help - more than 145,000 hours last year
  • Food delivery - 47,369 menus per year
  • Telehelp - 944 active users

Remember Them Campaign

The City Council is actively promoting the social campaign "Remember Them" aimed at combating the problem of unwanted social isolation of older people.
