Alicante launches new Waste Recycling Centre: €93 million investment

A new stage in waste management
The Municipality of Alicante has approved the feasibility study for the new Waste Treatment Centre (CETRA) . Its implementation involves the renovation of existing facilities , the construction of new facilities and their management for 20 years . The project is presented by Prezero España SA and Prezero Gestión de Residuos SA and is estimated at 93.2 million euros .
What does the project include?
- Complete modernization of CETRA
- Construction of new sorting lines:
- Fraction "residue": up to 80 t/hour
- Fraction "organic": up to 30 t/hour (60,000 t/year)
- Production of high quality compost
- Fuel Raw Materials (CSR) Production Line
- Upgrade of biomethanization station (30,000 t/year)
- Purification of filtrate using reverse osmosis and evaporation
- Production of electricity from biogas (up to 3.4 MW)
Future capacity and processing
- New area for composting plant waste - 2,500 m²
- The total area of the pre-treatment zone is about 20,000 m²
- Potential: up to 10,000 tons of compost per year
- The capacity of the fourth cell of the landfill is 1 million tons (enough until 2037)
- Possibility of expansion by another 1 million m³

"This is the most ambitious modernisation project of CETRA in decades. It will ensure the efficient recycling of Alicante's waste for the next 20 years."
🔁 Competition and choice
There were two proposals participating in the competition:
- Prezero - €93.2 million / 20 years
- FCC + Cívica - €54.2 million / 14 years
Municipal experts chose the Prezero option as the most cost-effective and risk-resistant.
🔄 Temporary measures
The current contract expires on August 31, 2025 , and it is planned to temporarily extend it for another 9 months until the tender is held.
Current investments
In parallel, the city is already investing €17 million in upgrading CETRA in order to:
- introduce brown container for biowaste
- produce compost for city parks and agriculture
Alicante is taking a major step towards a sustainable future. The new Waste Recycling Centre will ensure environmentally friendly and cost-effective recycling until 2046. The city will become a leader in innovative recycling at the regional level.
