Alicante to start sending out waste tax notices: electronically and by mail

From 1 September to 15 November 2025, the City of Alicante will send out notifications regarding the tax on the collection, transport and recycling of municipal solid waste (the so-called "taça de básura") by email through the DEHú platform , as well as by regular mail .

📅 Payment terms

Following changes made by the Spanish government to bring local taxes into line with European requirements, the payment period has been extended until December 22, 2025 .
For taxpayers with automatic debit, payment will be made on December 3 .

🧾 Why these changes?

The waste tax is now levied separately from the property tax (IBI) , with which it previously coincided. This is the result of new municipal regulations aimed at reflecting the real costs of waste removal and treatment , as required by the EU.

🔐 Electronic notification DEHú

The municipality recommends that citizens register with the DEHú Single Electronic Notification Service in order to:

• Receive official notifications in digital format;
• Simplify administrative procedures;
• Avoid the need for personal visits to offices.

You can register through the Spanish e-government portal or the tax service website.

📊 How is the tax calculated?

The amount of tax depends on:

• Area of the premises ;
• Cadastral value .

This rule applies to:

• Residential buildings, offices, shops, bars, restaurants, sports complexes, schools, hotels and religious facilities .

💳 Discounts up to 20% - for waste sorting

For the first time , benefits and discounts are being introduced:

• Up to 20% of the amount when using containers for organic waste (brown bins);
• Using the electronic card or the application "Tú haces Alicante" ;
• The discount will be applied in 2025 if the card is used before December 31, 2024 ;
• Those who join later will receive a discount next year .

🏢 Where can I get an invoice?

If you have not received the notification by email or mail, you can go in person to the Municipal Taxpayer's Office (Oficina Municipal del Contribuyente) to obtain a duplicate.
