🧹 Alicante increases cleanup on Tabarca Island by 60% and doubles waste separation
New contract with Netial: more staff and modern equipment to keep the island clean during high season
Alicante, 12 July 2025 - The City of Alicante has significantly increased its cleaning and waste collection work on Nova Tabarca Island during the summer season. Compared to previous years, the number of cleaning staff has been increased by 60%, from 3 to 5 people daily, 7 days a week, in July and August. These measures are part of a new contract with Netial , the contractor responsible for maintaining the island.
In addition, the island has introduced an innovative service for collecting waste twice a day in catering establishments using a new electric vehicle. This will optimize the service and reduce the negative impact of waste on the environment and the visual perception of the island.
Modern ecological solutions for protecting nature and comfortable conditions
To improve the aesthetics and protect against animals, decorative boxes were installed that hide household containers for separate waste collection by fractions. This reduces visual pollution and protects the containers from invasion by seagulls and cats.
Also implemented:
- Aluminum Can Compactors - For Easy Recycling and Space Savings
- Coloured bins for separate waste collection , making it easier for residents and tourists to sort waste
The waste collection point is a key element of the system
One of the important innovations was the launch of a waste collection and sorting point on the island, where all types of collected waste are processed daily. From 7:00 to 10:00 in the morning, waste is transported to the mainland by a special vessel - before the arrival of tourists.
The facility is equipped with containers and steel cages for cardboard, as well as three powerful presses for compact storage and transportation of waste.
Official comments and future plans
The Vice Mayor of Alicante, responsible for cleaning and waste management, Manuel Villar , noted:
"The waste collection and cleaning system on Nova Tabarka Island now matches the level of any city district. Shifts of cleaners have been organized, waste collection has been introduced directly at restaurants, which prevents food waste from ending up in regular containers. A modern waste collection point has been created, which ensures proper sorting and timely transportation to the mainland."
Villar stressed that the introduction of the new electric vehicle with a hydro-flushing system has improved service to the Horeca (hotel and restaurant) channels.
Also, by the start of the tourist season, the container fences were repaired and the bright stickers on the urns were updated to make sorting easier for visitors and residents.
Taking care of the natural appearance and green areas of the island
As part of a comprehensive approach to maintaining the island, green spaces were cared for: wind- and climate-resistant plants and trees were planted, decorative gravel surfaces were laid, which improved the landscape and harmoniously fit into the natural appearance of the island.
