🏗️ Alicante accelerates expansion of Mercalicante agro-industrial complex

A project to expropriate 19,500 m² of land to attract new companies has been approved

Alicante, July 1, 2025.
The Alicante Municipality has approved at a meeting of the City Council a project to expropriate 19,433 m² of land for the subsequent expansion of the Mercalicante territory , a key agro-industrial cluster in the region. 3.2 million euros will be allocated for the acquisition of the plots, according to a previously agreed plan by the Board of Directors of the complex.

🔍 The expansion aims to support growth and sustainability

The decision follows the approval of an investment analysis in June 2024, which recommended expanding the Mercalicante area by adding adjacent land. In November of the same year, the Department of Urban Development requested the preparation of an expropriation project, and in December , an additional issue of capital for the company was approved to acquire 19,500 m² of land.

✅ Council decision: approval of the project and rejection of complaints

At the meeting on 1 July 2025, the City Council rejected the objections submitted and approved the final project for the expropriation of land plots worth €3,209,003 . These plots will be added to the existing Mercalicante areas , thus ensuring the conditions for further growth and modernisation of the cluster.

📈 New impetus for Alicante's agro-industry

The Mercalicante extension aims to:

  • Strengthening the strategic position of the complex
  • Reaction to high occupancy of current areas
  • Attracting new agro-industrial and logistics companies
  • Promoting economic growth and environmental sustainability of the sector

Mercalicante continues to develop as a key centre for food logistics, distribution and production in the south of the Valencian Community, contributing to the creation of new jobs and improving the region's food security.
