Alicante concentrates 18% of the province's companies and generates 25% of its GDP
On May 30, 2025, the Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, presented the first Report on the city's economic sectors , prepared by the Economic Observatory of Alicante for the Impulsalicante agency. According to the report, the city concentrates 18% of all registered companies in the province and produces about 25% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which highlights the importance of Alicante in the regional economy.
📈 Key findings of the study
- Growth in business numbers : Over the past year , 1,000 new businesses have registered in Alicante, bringing the total to 25,467 . This shows that business activity is recovering from the pandemic and confidence in the local economy is growing.
- Large companies : The average size of companies in Alicante, measured by number of employees, is 75% higher than the provincial average. This explains the city's higher contribution to GDP with a smaller share of companies.
- Labour productivity : Value added per worker ranges from €49,987 in the health sector to €68,086 in the automotive industry.
- Contribution of industrial zones : The city's industrial areas provide 44.5% of the total turnover and 37.4% of the GDP generated by companies. An expansion of industrial areas by 2 million square meters is currently under consideration.
🏛️ The significance of the report for the city
Mayor Barcala noted that this is the first study based on data specific to the city of Alicante, rather than extrapolating provincial information. The report will be an important tool for assessing the effectiveness of municipal economic policies and identifying areas for improvement.
The full report will be available next week on the website impulsalicante.es , giving all interested parties access to the data for economic analysis and research.
