Alicante, June 7, 2025.
The City of Alicante, together with the organization Ecovidrio , has launched a major campaign to increase the separate collection of glass containers in the areas of San Agustin, Santa Cruz, La Florida and Pla del Bon Repos . These areas have been identified as the most promising for increasing glass recycling volumes using artificial intelligence (AI) .
The initiative will see 88 new green bins installed and door-to-door visits by environmental educators reaching over 70,000 households , educating residents about the importance of recycling and sustainable consumption.
🧠 Artificial intelligence — on guard of ecology
For the first time, a city sustainability project uses AI to analyze daily container loading data, taking into account population density, consumption and other socio-demographic factors .
📊 Thanks to the digital analysis, it was possible to identify 104 statistical units where there is a high potential for increasing glass recycling volumes . Based on this data, Ecovidrio and the City Council decided to focus their efforts on the four areas mentioned, covering a total of more than 74,700 homes .
