
💧 More than 282,000 plastic bottles avoided thanks to drinking fountains in Alicante
📍 Alicante , 13 June 2025 - The city continues its strong commitment to sustainability and the careful use of water resources . Thanks to the installation of 22 chilled drinking water machines , it has been possible to avoid the use of 282,432 plastic bottles in just one year . These data were presented at the second meeting of the Board of Directors of Aguas Municipalizadas de Alicante (Amaem) in 2025.
🚰 Installing drinking fountains: the path to a clean future
The initiative is carried out by Aguas de Alicante in collaboration with the Municipality of Alicante , with the support of the political group Vox . The project started in July 2024 with Phase I - a pilot installation of 6 machines in areas with high traffic during the summer.
📈 Then came Phase II and Phase III , which added 7 and 9 more devices , respectively. In total, 22 drinking machines are located throughout the city:
- in the center and tourist areas
- in residential areas
- at sports facilities
- on the island of Tabarka

✅ Reduce plastic pollution
✅ Provide citizens and tourists with a healthy alternative to bottled water

As part of the PERTE programme for the digitalisation of water systems , Alicante is launching the Intelligent Management System for Reclaimed Water (SIGAR) :

— Objective: to improve the coverage and sustainability of infrastructure

- 🔄 Updating the collectors in Joan Fuster Park
- 🛢 Installation of sedimentation filters at the EBAR Cocó station
- ♻ Improvements at the Rincon de Leon Wastewater Treatment Plant
- 🔁 Repair of trunk networks in the San Gabriel area
📊 16th Aguas de Alicante Sustainability Report
The company presented its sixteenth annual report , compiled according to the international GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standard. The document covers environmental, social and economic aspects of work:

- ✅ 100% of consumed electricity is from renewable sources
- ⚡ 3.58 MWh of self-produced clean energy
💧 Water resources:
- 🔎 86.71% - technical efficiency of the network
- 🧪 169.73 km — inspected sewer networks
♻ Circular Economy:
- 💯 100% of wastewater treatment sludge is recycled
- ♻ 30,858 tons of construction waste - recycled
- 💡 €520,000 — investment in research and innovation (R&D+i)
