Alicante honours local police, announces new headquarters
On May 31, 2025, a gala event was held in Alicante to celebrate the 178th anniversary of the local police service. The ceremony took place in the square in front of the city hall and was presided over by the mayor of the city, Luis Barcala.
The event saw the presentation of awards to 167 police officers, 24 tow truck operators, and representatives of companies and individuals for their involvement in the recovery efforts in Valencia. Employees who had worked for 20 years and those who had retired this year were also recognised. Additionally, 43 police officers were awarded for outstanding service and several citizens for their cooperation with the police.
Mayor Barcala thanked the recipients for their "heroic actions" and stressed the importance of their contribution to the safety of the city. Particular attention was paid to the group of employees sent to Valencia to help after the floods.
During the ceremony, it was announced that work on the new local police headquarters on Locutor Vicente Hipólito Avenue will begin in September. The new building is expected to open by mid-2026.
Security adviser Julio Calero said the project has already been approved and work will begin in September. The new headquarters will be part of a modernization effort for the police, including upgrading the fleet, equipment and uniforms.
Calero added that the local police force now numbers over 530 and is continuing to recruit new officers. A new organizational structure is also being implemented, with divisions across the city districts to enhance security and public service.
Particular attention was paid to the retirement of Chief Commissioner Jose Maria Conesa after 36 years of service. He emphasized the ability of the police to adapt to the changing needs of the city.
Over the past year, local police have handled more than 72,000 calls, carried out almost 6,000 crash operations and helped 188 victims of domestic violence.
Mayor Barcala noted that Alicante is a safe city, as confirmed by surveys of tourists, and thanked the police for their contribution to maintaining order and security.
